EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Computers used by police to control almost 66 percent of the outdoor surveillance cameras in Washington DC were compromised by two Romanian hackers. Their objective: to spread ransomware, including Cerber and Dharma, through spam emails. The alleged hacking took place almost a year ago.

Doug Olenick from SC Media reports, “The Secret Service says it learned of the hack on January 12, 2017, when the computers connected to individual cameras went offline. Further investigation of the affected computers found that an unauthorized person was operating the computer and had installed and was running programs not authorized by the police department.”
