EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Whole Foods announced Thursday that taprooms, restaurants, and other in-store venues were the target of a data breach. Fortunately, it uses a different point-of-sale (POS) system for its roughly 450 US stores, which was not part of the hack.

The grocer, recently bought by Amazon, said that Amazon systems do not connect to the affected systems at Whole Foods and that Amazon.com transactions were not involved. The company has launched an investigation, contacted law enforcement, and is working with a cyber forensics team to address the issues.

Interestingly, the cyber attack comes right on the heels of an attack on Sonic, the fast food chain, which followed an attack on Chipotle.
