EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

In response to major breaches like the one Equifax suffered, some companies have opted to take law and order into their own hands and hack back. It brings to mind the old adage that you can’t fight fire with fire.

The problem is that doing so could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations, and even be illegal. But perhaps even more importantly, innocent people could be hurt in the crossfire–considering that many cyberattacks are launched when hackers take over other peoples’ computers.

While retaliatory hacking does happen, it typically is not acknowledged. However, the secrecy veil might soon be lifted if legislation proposed earlier this year to legalize it is passed.
