Today, August 26, is Women’s Equality Day in the United States. But earlier this month, women were pushing for equality at Defcon. While most people are aware that the tech industry is mostly male, that fact becomes obvious at major conferences. The cues are both visual and cultural.

With only 11 percent of the cybersecurity workforce composed of women, there’s work to be done on the equalizing front. Especially when important career networking takes place at big events that can sometimes seem inhospitable to women. To change that dynamic, women are taking matters into their own hands, even if it has to be away from the main stage.
