EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

A 36-year-old Chinese national was arrested in Los Angeles this week in connection with a hacking conspiracy.

The FBI has accused Yu Pingan of Shanghai, China, also known as “GoldSun,” of being involved with the installation of a remote access trojan (RAT) and having ties to co-conspirators who have allegedly used a variant of Sakula malware. Security experts have linked such a variant to the massive data breached suffered by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), as well as the 2015 data breach at Anthem.

According to an August 21 indictment, Yu conspired with others to acquire and use malware to orchestrate cyberattacks against at least four US companies.
