Identity thieves hijack cellphone accounts to go after virtual currency

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Mobile phones have become our lifelines. For CXOs and other executives, mobile phones are critical to getting business done. Our identities are typically tied to those phone numbers. But once a hacker takes over a mobile account, it’s kind of like the keys to the kingdom–many services are often tied to a mobile number as a backup security measure.

Not surprisingly, mobile theft is becoming a favored tactic among hackers. In fact, mobile phone hijackings are on the rise. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in January 2013, there were 1,038 such incidents reported; three years later, that number had increased to 2,658. Lately, their primary (though not exclusive) targets have been those who deal in the world of virtual currency.
