EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Many are under the false impression that the Mac is immune–or less susceptible–to hackers. A new story shows more evidence to the contrary. Known as Firefly or Fruitfly, the malware allows hackers to spy on its victims and has been infecting Macs for at least five years.

Researchers have found no financial motivation behind this malware. Given its targeting of home users, it seems to rule out intentions of nation-state attacks. Disturbingly, it appears to have been created to simply look at what users are doing. The malware can capture screenshots, keystrokes, webcam images, and information about the infected Mac.

Despite the fact that the malware has gone undetected for so long, it is actually easy to spot.
