EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Following the outbreak of the Petya ransomware attack, new information has surfaced. Analysts are now questioning the true intent of the cyber attack and taking a second look.

Many now believe that this malware was designed merely to be mistaken as the ransomware Petya but was never intended to collect money. Now being dubbed “NotPetya,” among other names, it appears to have been hatched to destroy and spread rapidly. Ukraine is the apparent big-game target, given the timing of the hit: one day before a major Ukrainian holiday.

While the malware spread to 64 countries, “NotPetya” began in Ukraine, where it targeted more than 12,500 machines.
