EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The WannaCry ransomware attack was a rude wake-up call due to its fast spread around the world and disruption of critical services like health care. Among the worst hit was the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Scotland–even causing operations to be cancelled.

To unlock computer files at impacted organizations, WannaCry malware demanded a payment of $300 (£230) in Bitcoin to unlock files for each computer. A worm – malware that spreads among computers without further outside help – spread infections of WannaCry.
