EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Unknown malware stole documents from Emmanuel Macron’s campaign in the French presidential election, but failed to sway the election because of preemptive measures put in place using “cyber deception.” According to experts, the cyber attack that stole the documents likely was a spearphishing attack using an attachment containing malware not detected by the advanced threat prevention systems in place.
The response to this attack included immediate engagement with the press and reportedly leaking fake data to slow down the attackers and create doubt among readers about the authenticity of the data published.
